According to my Webster's, the three English nouns spelled "bail" (vessel for removing water from a boat, temporary release, and securing half-loop) all derive from different languages (respectively, Latin, Middle French, and Norse). "Bale," in both its archaic "great evil" and modern "lump of pressed goods" senses, comes from Old German. So you're right, sort of: since it's of German origin, "bale" would match the car better.
