I picked up a Type III Fastback about a year ago. This is the first VW I have ever owned. I live in the middle of no where of central Nevada. In fact, we did not even have local Internet access until a few months ago so I just recently found this web site. Firstly, I am finding out that the automatic transmission presents unique problems. The 'original' tranny lost third and reverse. I replaced it with a used one from The Parts Place. I have been trying to find a place to rebuild the other tranny for a spare but am having a tough time finding any one that wants to work on this thing. Any ideas? Also, I note that there are a number of Type III's around this state down because of tranny woes. I would suspect maybe over heating problems in this climate. Is there any way to hook in a tranny cooler? Lastly, I have noted quite a bit of discussion of converting to a single carb. setup, [mostly cons!]. This car was already set up that way when I got it, with the carb sticking up into the luggage compartment. I had a tin smith make up a 'box' in which I covered the hole, carb. and air filter then carpeted it. Only tried and true Type III owners would know this is not the way it is supposed to be. It runs absolutely great and is very dependable. It make 20+ MPG around town and 30+MPG on the highway. Thanks, Bill Fyfe '71 Fastback
