I have a book by Brian Long, forgot the title, but yes, Porsche was commissioned to help with the design process. They are the ones who designed the Type I transaxle and did the first designs with what we are familiar with, the engine under the cargo area like the Squareback examples (I think it was the Type 55, anyone remember the image I had posted to my Type Three Tech page?). I can be considered that Porsche was commissioned by VW quite a bit in helping out. However, that doesn't necessarily make it a Porsche!
