Hi When you remove the motor from an automatic transmission you are supposed to separate the torque convertor from the engine by removing the 3 13mm bolts that hold the flex plate to the torque convertor. After doing this the engine comes right out without disturbing anything on the transmission. One should then tie something over the face of the torque convertor to prevent it from accidently slipping off it's shaft. I have removed a few engines like this before and have never had any prolem with the TC or any of its shafts. BTW this is the way VW discribes the job in their manuals.
