I replaced everything. I only had one ball joint that might have been
salvagable, everything else was shot. I could turn one wheel about 3 inches
before the other one started to turn.
The KYBs are a monotube design gas pressure shock. They are quite a bit
stiffer than the stock ones or even the standard KYBs. I like the way they
handle so I don't mind the mildly rough (choppy) ride. Its not near as bad
as a mini truck that has been slammed, but definately harsher than stock.
I've used KYB shocks for years on VWs, street and off-road, and on several
other cars and trucks, and they are probably the best value in a shock
unless your looking for something specific like a drag or highly lifted
4x4. Their web site is www.kyb.com

Marty
