Hi all, My trip to the show today is the longest one I've made in the '69--at least 140 miles each way. (Longest trip in the '71 was over 6,000 miles, but that's another story...) The car largely did just fine--I cruised mostly at 70mph on the way there, and did jaunts at both 60ish and 70ish on the way home. Pretty much interstates all the way. Of course, I'm writing because there was some strange behavior: when I take my foot off the gas to shut the throttle valve at highway speeds, I smell burning (oil?) just seconds later. Push the gas again, smell goes away. The car is a fairly stock injected 1600 with automatic transmission. Stock exhaust, full-flow oil filter, and about 2,000 miles on a very thorough rebuild. The transmission fluid is bright pink and does not smell burnt at all. There are no obvious oil leaks. The auxilliary air regulatar may be on the fritz, as the car hunts at idle. After getting off the highway, I tried similar engine braking in second gear at 35-40mph going down a decent hill--seemed to smell that burning smell, though not as powerful (both windows down & a good breeze going at that point). I think it's engine related, not tranny, as the fluid looks/smells fine. Why can I smell it in the car at 60 or 70mph? Doesn't seem to be coming from the heater, and the rear engine cover appears to seal very well. Windows up or down, popouts opened or closed, doesn't seem to matter. Note that the last engine failure involved oil strewn all about the engine compartment--though this was apparently due to overpressure resulting from a severly compromised (i.e., hole burnt in top) piston. Also, at some point somebody screwed three little screws into the oil breather to hold the plastic cover on--for no apparent reason. O.k.--there might be a lot of red herrings here, but some of it's got to be relevant! Any ideas, anyone? Have I got a problem? -Greg '69 & '71 Squarebacks '63 Beetle
