Do yourself a favor and buy yourself a present -- John Muir's "How to Keep
Your Volkswagen Alive:  Step by Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot."
It costs about $20 and explains how works a Volkswagen.  I am not
mechanically inclined and knew nothing about cars.  When I became fed up
with mechanics taking my money and leaving my car in worse condition than
it was before taking it there, I armed myself with Muir and started working
on my own car.  Don't stereotype yourself -- at least not until you check
out Muir's book.  That way, you will be able to stereotype yourself as the
"typical T3 owner who knows EVERYTHING about her T3.  

Also, find someone in your area who knows air-cooled VWs and take them with
you (at least until you learn enough through Muir).
