Greg, I recently did battle (and I mean battle) with the generator in my 71 Super Beetle. Driving down the road, red light, burning smell. I opened the decklid and the generator was smoking!!!!! I initially thought it was the regulator, so i bought a new one. That didnt solve my problem, so i went out and bought a reman. bosch generator (90 some odd dollars!!!) installed it and thought i was on my way. driving down the road, red light, burning smell..... "Oh S*it". Turns out my regulator was the bad seed. It took two regulators and a reman generator to learn this one lesson..... replace everything!! Now Im running a used generator, new regulator and have no problems. Boy what an expensive lesson!! When/if you replace your generator do not forget to POLARIZE IT!!! another expensive lesson I wont get into here...... Good Luck. Boyd Drew 1965 Notchback 1500s 1971 Super Beetle
