The reason to port a head is obvious, increased air flow. The reason for polishing is to reduce friction. Friction in the intake does promote swirling of the fuel/air mixture which prevents puddling of the fuel in the intake and ports. Polishing of the exhaust allows the exhaust to escape more quickly which creates better scavaging and reduces back pressure. A good porting of the intake along with matched manifolds and gaskets will do ANY engine good.
