Just from hearing the list speak daily.....anything is possible, but not always supported. You can and you can't put a type1 motor in a type3 (oil dipstick location etc....); you can and you can't put a typeIV motor in a type3 (over heating problems); you have a type3 ghia and a Karmaghia (what's that all about). Its simple.....if there's a will there is a way.....but not all ways are good willings! Stock is best........but hey......I just saw my first Mazda Rotary A12 using a TypeIV tranny in a Type1! My Opinion.........keep it stock.....unless you are extremely informed and or knowledgeable. If its just a tranny swap...and a few part comparison......These people in this group are God's....a few of them anyway (they have the answers) But.....wow....your question was very general! ---------- From: Philip Stevens[SMTP:pstevens@cats.ucsc.edu] Sent: Thursday, March 19, 1998 11:36 AM To: Vintage VWs; Type III List Subject: parts interchangeability Newbie question #1: How interchangeable are major mechanical parts (engines, transaxles, suspension/steering, etc) from year to year and model to model? For example, is it possible to put a Type IV engine in a Notchback? An irs transaxle in an early Karmann Ghia? SuperBeetle front suspension in early cars? And what swaps would people recommend in order to optimize handling/performance/economy? Thanks. Phil
