Hmmm... In several (non-VW) factory manuals, they explain that the spiral of the cable is used to draw heavier lube along the cable- it works like an auger. Of course, which end you lube depends on the spiral of the cable and the direction it rotates. Seems that a bunch of schloopy grease like the lithium spray might work in this way... maybe...
