Re: Values from the troubleshooting guide

Please disregard last message as I messed up on the room temperature
measurement. I made the correction below. ~Toby Erkson

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The thermoswitch should not show any continuity above the specified
switch-on temperature.
Actuating temperatures:
 -311 906 161 = -12 to -18 degrees C (10 to 0 degrees F)
  (Aug. 67 to July 69)
 -311 906 161A = 0 to +10 degrees C (32 to 14 degrees F)
  (Aug. 69 to March 70)
 -311 906 161C = -6 to -14 degrees C (21 to 7 degrees F)
  (from April 70)
 -311 906 161B = -2 to -8 degrees C (28 to 18 degrees F)
(For service installation only up to March 70)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Measurement of resistance with ohmmeter at room temperature (about 20 degrees
C/68 degrees F):
Sensor I not more than 300 ohms
Sensor II not more than 2.5k ohms (should be between 1.5 to 2.5k ohms)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Temperature of a "warm engine":
 50-70 degrees C / 122-158 degrees F

Note: The guide mentions this in several places. On page 30, under NOTE,
it reads, "Engine oil temperature must be 50-70[degrees]C
(122-158[degrees]F)." I would imagine that when performing warm engine
tests the temperature should be measured from the oil in the sump.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

If you are experiencing hesitation problems:
 "The service temperature sensors I (311 906 081 B)
and II (022 906 041 A) must not be installed in
vehicles which have control units with yellow,
 brown or black stickers"

The sticker can be found either on the top or on one of the larger flat
surfaces (front or back side) of the control unit ("the brains", "black
box", "computer",...)
        --------------------------------------------
If fuel consumption is too high:
 "Note
Vehicles with control units which do not have a yellow, brown
  or black sticker that is:
  - Type 3 up to Chassis No. 311 2 090 091
  - Type 4 up to Chassis No. 411 2 018 712
can be equipped with temperature sensors
  311 906 181 B (for Type 3) and 022 906 041 A (for Type 4)
if measures above do not fix the problem"

"measures above" includes checking cold start valve for no leakage,
thermostat properly adjusted for cooling air regulation, compression check
is OK, and for the Type 3 with pressure switch (up to July 69) that it is
opening.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope this helps out some. I'm working on getting the guide scanned. It is
meant to be used with the VW 1218 FI tester. Also, tabs on the right edge of
the pages to allow you to quickly go to a section (Starting trouble, Hesitation
trouble, Wiring diagram, etc.) and there are 'finger' cutouts (I *think* the
guide refers to them as a "thumb index") on the top or bottom of the pages;
these allow you to skip to a section depending upon the outcome of the testing
or problem. So, I am figuring out a way to represent the thumb index so you can
print the guide and use the thumb index (maybe cutting them out after
printing?). Gimme time.
