Sorry, not intended to be cryptic.  All the T3 brains had the same 9 
digit VW part #, but each had a different letter suffix.  Everything 
is either stamped in the metal case (most years) or on a sticker 
(latest versions.)  Here's how they go:

A, 68 superceded by
B in 69, early A versions are better off replaced with Bs
C used to 12/70, then replaced with D along with some other parts
D used 1/71 to the end of the 71 model year
E used in 72-3 (there were different versions of E, but that's minor)
