plastic restoration

dashboard restoration was discussed a while ago, but what about hard plastic?

in particular,

rear-view mirror - is there something that can be applied to this (the black
part, back of the glass) to blacken the fading and slightly scratched bits and
maybe even  protect it from the sun?

sqaure rear hatch hinge covers - these are very brittle and faded, but
otherwise in good condition.  i'm going to paint them anyway, so it doesn't
matter what they look like after stuff was applied to them.  i guess i want
them to be a bit more pliable and less likely to fall apart at the slightest
scrape.
