Either way is fine. No difference in the results.

A good question; the owner's manual has a good answer.

Normal permissible speed ranges:

1st gear: 0-15 mph
2nd gear: 10-35 mph
3rd gear: 20-55 mph
4th gear: 30 and up

economical speed ranges:

2nd gear: 10-20 mph
3rd gear: 20-35 mph
4th gear: 30-60 mph

when required for rapid acceleration for brief periods only:

2nd gear: up to 43 mph
3rd gear: up to 60 mph
