The pump relay is on the "firewall" under the dash. Could be bad, but chances are your trigger points are dirty, in the distributor under the breaker plate. Two screws on the outside gets it loose. Use clean brown paper to clean between the points. Don't file! If you pull the distributor, it's much easier to work on, plus you can check the make and break on the trigger points without cranking the engine over. Sometimes minor(really minor), bending is necessary to compensate for rubbing block wear on the points. Also check continuity from the socket to the points, I've had one set that had an open where there was a rivet. Sounds like maybe the control module is timing out, you have a 2-3 second run of the pump after the trigger points quit opening and closing. On another odder note, I had the same symptoms with a loose plug on the ignition switch at the base of the steering column. I think that '71 is the only year for that plug, though. If you don't have the Bentley factory manual, better get it before proceeding very far with FI troubleshooting. Muir's Idioit's Guide also has a good section on FI troubleshooting but the circuit diagram is pretty generic. Your really need both books. So now you have a spare fuel pump. Hang on to it, you may need it someday.
