Those chrome covers may look trick, but they won't hold a gasket(see Gene Berg's writings). Go to the scrapyard, get some genuine VW covers and bail springs, some German gaskets and a can of Permatex. Clean thorougly, repant if desired/necessary and make sure the mating surfaces are CLEAN. A coat of Permatex(covers only) followed by an overnight setup on the heads before starting will keep those gaskets >from moving. I've had one set of gaskets on for a year and a half without leaks. I was once advised by a auto tranny rebuilder never to use silicone on covers, pieces break off from squeeze-out and get into the works, not good. I've been using Permatex for years without leaks. For paint, I like Aerovoe black engine enamel, heat sets it up and it has a nice porcelein-like finish. Keep away from gasoline until it sets, though.
