Well, Altho the 6v wasn't designed to do 12v, if one rewound it with more turns of smaller wire, it should work. Output'd be reduced a bit (the whole 'number of wires passing through a field' vs the 'v= pi r squared' vs current ratings of smaller wires mess that one gets in Physics 201) but as long as you're conservative with electrical loading (read, lose the killer stereo, dude!) it would be survivable. So, the real question: Why, in 1972, did VW build a relatively sophisticated EFI setup and power it with a generator??!
