Another thing you might check is whether the steering shaft is rubbing
on the edge of the cover tube. Look up from under the car, between the
footwell and the steering box. The cover tube comes through the body,
and if your steering box is a little off-axis from the shaft, it can
push the shaft up enough to grate against the tube. If this is the
problem, just use it, it'll eventually go away as you wear off the end
of the tube.
