Cheap huh? First, get everything tuned to specifications -- that's free. Next, if you have FI there isn't really much else you can do. If it's carbed then use dual throat carbs if your heads are dual port. Stay with 32mm or go up to 34mm throats. 36mm and higher only if they engine is going to be a heavy breather (i.e. not even close to stock!). A merged exhaust header and dual quiet pack mufflers are helpful. Ratio rockers (1.4:1) can give some performance as they allow more valve lift, just make sure the rockers clear the valve cover. Electronic points keep your system firing consistently and at [virtually] any rpm level (reduced maintenance, too). A higher voltage coil or other system to increase spark energy keeps misfires from occurring. Large air filters allow better breathing (on my engine I went from 1.5" height airfilters to 1.25" and immediately noticed a drop in engine performance) -- K&N are my favorite after-market ones. If you want to break the case open then go with a mild cam like the Engle 110. Don't start goin' radical unless you start changing the rest of the engine to match. Just some ideas to play with. Look to StreetBeat for the long daddies of ragtops. Water tight and sharp looking. They advertise in one of the VW mags. The phone number is on my VW stats web page.
