Most opinion with a 6V to 12V change is that the starter will work OK without needing to be changed. As it's a motor, it generates a voltage in the reverse direction to that applied, and the windings are very robust anyway. Resistance in the wires will also limit the current (voltage drop can be useful!). Some people find the solenoid gives up sooner than normal due to the bigger current it is switching. The right way to convert is to go the whole way, with 12V flywheel and clearancing for it in the bell-housing, but if you decide to go the whole way, another trick employed is to use the 12V flywheel to mill the soft magnesium alloy to size; there's (apparently) not much to remove, plus a bit of wobble to give clearance. Don't do this under power or the magnesium shavings could catch fire! There's a bit of technique needed, and I would be inclined to use a 'spare' flywheel myself. I'm just reporting what many others on RAMVA newsgroup report; maybe all of them were Beetle or Bus conversions. Dave.
