It has been done, at least once. A while back on Hot VW they had a feature article on a Square that had been converted to a pickup with big block (455 cu.in.) V8 mounted midship in the box. This was not a "sleeper". It was heavily modified, including '39 Ford headlights grafted into the fenders (looked pretty nice actually), chopped top, pick-up conversion, scallopped paint, etc. Definitely a member of the DARK SIDE gang. I will look up the issue and details when I get home. I scan a couple of pictures, too.
