Probably not your problem.

Bad idea, I trust you are joking.

What intakes?  It IS possible that if you have nothing connected 
between the heat exchangers and the body, then fumes COULD be pulled 
in the intake boxes if there were a slight vacuum in the interior.

??? Do you mean the two round vent holes in the dash?  If so, these 
are not your problem either.

Very possibly the culprit.
