Not sure if I understand your symptoms correctly, but a breaking clutch cable (it's stranded or braided or whatever, and can fray as it breaks) dt% u thing similar. Happened to me in the '70 bus on Tuesday morning. :-o I replaced the cable yesterday, but I suspect I may have worn the clutch a fair amount getting it home -- when I stopped at lights, I left it in gear (second) with the clutch pedal pushed to the floor but the clutch itself partly engaged.
