I had a similar incident with a type I engine during a cold (-25 F) spell a few years back. I attributed the event to the fact that the cooling air flaps were barely open and I had been operating the engine at a high rpm for an extented period. This diverts the majority of cooling air through the heat exchangers. I would check the operation of the cooling air flaps. I've also found that the aluminum type flexible hose will disintigrate over time at the air velocities which occur in the VW system. Good luck!
