no,no, i can live without the actual choke feature of the choke element, i think i had a working choke for about a week once till it stuck closed during an errand running trip giving me about an hour of grief and lousey gas milage no, my problem is that i rebuilt my carbs recently and found the right choke element broken in about five(5) peices, right now its held together with e-tape, there has to be something there , right, to block out excessive vacume leak brandon 73 square -----Original Message----- From: Gurrola_J <Gurrola_J@BLS.GOV> To: whizby <whizby@pdq.net> Date: Monday, December 07, 1998 10:52 PM Subject: RE: [T3] choke, gasp | I, too, have the same carburetors in my car. That is, had, because |I just sold it. But, I just completely disabled the chokes on mine and |locked them tight in the open position. They are not needed, technically, |to run the car. They are strictly a warm-up device. In my view they are an |unneeded element that needs constant adjustment. Just be 'Blip" the |throttle enought to keep it from dying, Even on the coldest mornings, if |your ignition system is in proper working order (this is very critical with |dual carbs), it should be able to keep an idle after it has properly warmed |up. I suggest you begin by checking if the thermostat is functioning |properly. It may be stuck open. What will happen is that on very cold |days, it may take a long time to reach operating temps.(or it may never |reach operating temp). This will'Aely cause not to keep an idle. If |that checks out OK, then recheck you static timiming. DOes it run? If no, |then make sure there are no leaks in the intake system, check carb to |manifold gaskets and manifold to head gasket. Make sure that it's all |sealed and tightened down. Solved?, If no , then check the battery voltage |for low voltage, less than 11.5 volts. If too low then recharge it or |replace ( think of the environment, please). SOlved? If no, then check the |coil per specs in the Bentely Service Manual. A quick check would be for |relative spark strength by holding the end that goes to the distributor with |set of insulated pliers. Hold them about 1/8 inch fro the surface of the |fan housing. PLEASE MAKE SURE THERE IS NO FIRE DANGER DUE TO SPILLED FUEL |OR OTHER FLAMMABLE FLUIDS . Now crank the engine over a few times and you |want to see the brightest spark possible. The more orange it appears, the |weaker the spark. | | This should get you there. Or a combination of these steps. | |> ---------- |> From: whizby[SMTP:whizby@pdq.net] |> Sent: Monday, December 07, 1998 9:48 AM |> To: type3@vwtype3.org |> Subject: [T3] choke, gasp |> |> oh my god! i just went to purchase new choke elements for my 32pdsit |> RMMW wants $200 for both of them. the salvage yard wants that much too, at |> least its for the whole carbs |> does anyone know of a better(cheaper) source for these things? |> thanks brandon |> |> |> |> ------------------------------------------------------------------- |> List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org |>
