The engine number is stamped on the right case half, on top, just to the right of the split, just in front of the breather. The tranny number is stamped on the bottom of the tranny, a bit õã right of center, toward the front. I don't think there is any way to verify that your tranny is original from this number. VW didn't publish their tranny numbering dates like they did their engine and VIN numbers. The paperwork that came with my 72, which was purchased in Europe, however, includes the engine #, tranny # and VIN. Does anyone know if this is standard procedure in Europe? The VIN is stamped 3 places on all type 3s: front trunk in front of the spare tire, on the hump under the back seat, and in the drivers door jamb (on a sticker.) 69- cars also have a tag just inside the windshield on the driver's side.
