I just thought of something else to check. Many years ago my 63 beetle had
a sudden strong smell of gas. It was strongest inside the car and you could
hardly smell it outside. There were no wet spots under the car. The smell
was wicked strong in the car and I eventually traced it to the tunnel. Take
a good whiff around the emergency brake boot.... My fuel line had split
inside the tunnel (too much field beating). Had to run a new fuel line .
Hey, it's a long shot but it happened to me...
Someday I'll tell you how that same car accelerated by itself on steep
inclines :)
