> they [carburetors] are a reliable solution for many that >are not able to or willing to learn how to trouble shoot and repair the >stock F.I. system. Nathan hit the nail on the thumb! Where I live there is NO ONE who will work on old VW FI systems. (In fact, most shops here adamantly refuse to do any kind of work on air cooled VWs.) And some of us....okay, well, me at least.... would not or could not work on our own FIs because of a lack of knowledge, desire to obtain that knowledge, or...maybe just laziness. Who knows or cares? In a practical sense, if my '71 didn't have the Weber carbs, it simply would not exist in my soi-disant life. Another argument about cars vis-a-vis FI: When you are a bazillion miles away from home out here in this desolate desert and you have an FI failure, your car may completely stop running; with carbs, your car may run poorly but will limp home. I agree that FI was designed to correct all the evils of carbs, but maintaining an almost 30-year old system is more of a challenge than I care to undertake. New ICTs for $329 a pair and I've got performance...and reliability...that satisfies me. I ADMIRE and ENVY those on the list who can do their own service on their FI systems. However, my reality says "carbs". For those who are Motor Morons like me, don't be ashamed to wimp out and go to carbs if the alternative is to to suffer with inadequate resources in maintaining a complicated system. Nathan... your stating of the situation was, IMHO, excellent. It gave me the courage to "come out of the closet" and admit that I like my dual carbs. You provided me with the grit to admit that I am BOTH a carb person and a librarian! (Now, will anyone ever speak to me again????)
