Hi Carl, 317 020,499 means Type 3, Fastback, 1967 model (made around Aug/Sept 1966), number 020,499 since August 1st. So it's a 1967 model. (A 1970 has the long front and big flashers/lights). Some of the South African ones have older spec than European or USA. Yours may still have 5-hole drums and drum brakes, maybe? Is it original 12-Volt? Carb jets:- from engine no. T0259826:- main = X132.5 (L); X130 (R), but from Aug 68 (eng no. T0576729) = X130 (L); X127.5 (R). air correction = 150 (L); 120 (R) pilot with cut-off valve 50 PDSIT-2 = (L); PDSIT-3 = (R). I would have thought it more likely to be a problem with the accelerator pump. It should dispense between 0.35 and 0.55 ml each stroke. The amount is adjusted by a screw on the rod, I seem to recall. Door scraper rubbers are not readily available AFAIK. Beetle ones from '65 are long enough, but you will have to remove the old ones from the complete 'chrome' trim surround, and re-rivet the new or reclaimed rubbers in. It's a big job because the whole of the window assemblies have to come out, since the scraper frame is first to go in the door when assembling. I can't imagine you would get a genuine top speed much over 95 (mph), though the 1500S may have managed a couple of mph more. Many cars have somewhat optimistic speedos at the top end, where they don't have to be too accurate. I claim to have done about 92 mph for both my Fastback and Variant, but the Fastback managed it easier (injection). You will get through engine components faster doing that speed regularly, though. All the best, Dave. -----Original Message----- From: Carl Van Tonder <vtondc@RANDREF.CO.ZA> To: Type 3 Help (E-mail) <type3@vwtype3.org> Date: 17 August 1998 11:52 Subject: [T3] Just a few Questions >Hi all, > >Well with a bit of hiding of the faults she is through roadworthy, and I >will finally be able to get my share of speed fines. > >What I would like to find out is, is 95 mph a standard top speed for >this car with no mods (1966 according to the traffic dept. and 1970 >according to my chassis no.?? {31 7020 499} 1600 twin carb single port. >:-).
