It could be that the timing is too far advanced and when it climbs above a certain point the engine doesn't like it. You could try retarding it a bit. You could also have a bad wire from the points to the condenser wire inside the dist. A little change in the vac adv can flex that wire and cause a loss of the connection. You can check this by sucking on a hose connected to the vac adv while the engine is idling. It should speed up, but smoothly.
