RE: Secondary oil cooler


Oh yeah, I've look there since it's a popular spot to put them.  Trouble is,
that location is, of course, above the tranny which produces a good amount
of
heat on its own.  Plus, heat from the engine will radiate there and the
location
is a dead end at the top (where heat normally rises).  Putting a fan there,
be
it a blower or a drawer, will, minimally, suck air around the tranny
(preheating
it) and at worst just recirculate the air.  From an engineering standpoint
it's
just a plain bad idea and I don't care how many people have (incorrectly)
done
it.  Now, a heater in that location, like what VW did with the Type IV, is a
very good idea ;)

Porsche has oil lines that go to the front right fender where a simple coil
of
tubing (no fins or plates, just bare tubing) is mounted behind the headlamp
assembly.  That is their main oil cooler.  The oil not only gets cooled at
the
coils but also along its journey to and fro.  The turbos have an actual oil
radiator to maximize cooling efficiency.  DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME UNTIL
YOU'VE
EXAMINED THE REAL PORSCHE SETUP!  They have a protective, louvered panel to
protect the cooler and I believe some of the cooling air comes from the
front as
well.  Neither setup uses a fan.  But, I don't want to do that (especially
stringing up those oil lines!), so back to the subject at hand...

The location I'm going to work is the left side of the tranny, mounted
horizontally on my anti-sway mount and the square end mounted to a pivot
that
will attach to the lower three tranny side plate studs.  This keeps oil
lines
short, puts the cooler in the airstream and remains protected from tire
debris-splash and won't get "bottomed-out" since my 5-speed tranny mounts
will
get smashed before the cooler gets touched.  The bad side is that it's close
to
the ground so road surface heat may be a problem for extended idling periods
(slow city traffic and I-5 traffic in Seattle :) but an optional blower fan
can
cure this (a snorkel attached to the fan to draw in air higher up, thus the
air
would be cooler).

All of the aftermarket oil coolers that I have seen used are the cheap
tube-and-fin or the better radiator style (like Mesa).  Due to their size
they
require space and the upper tranny location is the easiest location.  I've
want
to keep my systems simple and common as much as possible which is why I am
using
a stock Type IV cooler (I think a stock Type III could work as well, but
just to
make sure...) and it allows me some more location options.
