Greg, ya know, that's so strange, but I had a similar sounding problem with my '69 Square (when the engine was running). It would make a periodic knocking sound, but it was random and I'm not sure it changed with the RPM of the engine. This happened less frequently at first, and then progressed to only a bit more frequently. Sometimes I'd start her up in the morning and have no problems or weird sounds all day, but other times I'd have the sound start up as soon as she was warmed up. That was the only common factor -- the engine was always warm as far as I can remember when the sound started up. I took the car to a few VW specialist shops, one being Bugformance in San Jose where I live, and I was told after they listened to it that it might be my fan. I took off all the tin & the fan housing & removed the fan after checking to see that it was still tightly attached. I found nothing wrong with the fan or assembly, and the sound returned not long after I'd reassembled the housing & driven it a few days. I have not yet taken the engine apart, and I plan to either replace it with one from Mofoco or have it rebuilt. If my sound might be similar to yours, and either I or a shop find something besides the fan that might have caused the noise, I'll be sure to post to the list to tell about it. And yes, I know I probably won't win any awards for being concise... :) Later! A noise (which, to the best of my >ability, I've located in the fan housing) coming from the engine sounds an >awful lot like loose change in an empty clothes dryer. ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
