My daughter & I finally made it out the door here for Columbus at about 7pm last night. She soon fell asleep and we started making good time. A little while into the trip, some stuff in the back by the cooler started squeaking and making a funny noise. Kinda like something rubbing against styrofoam. Kept cruising. After about two hours, we pulled into a McDonald's for some chow. Went to the back to shuffle things around to get rid of the noise... and realized that it was coming from the *engine*. Shit. :( Sounded more like little bits of metal clanking around, actually, now that I heard it from the outside without all of the road noise. We were hungry, engine was hot, air temps in the upper eighties and damn humid. (110%? ;) We phoned home, ate dinner and cooled off. Backed the car up under one of the (mosquito-swamped) parking lot lights and started to check things out. To make a long story short... my best guess is that one of the fan blades has come off or is loose... or there's a piece of metal (or stone?) crap in the fan. Engine runs great except for the noise. Screwdriver-probe-against-the-ear trick indicates that the noise is loudest in the inner fan housing. I took the boot off and tried to reach through to feel the blades, but none of them that I could get too felt loose. At about 10:30pm we left McD's and headed for home. :( :( :( So much for the Columbus show... and my poor little 3 & 1/2 -year-old crying "I wanted to go to Columbuso Hiiiiiiiiiio" all the way home. ("I know Daddy--it's a mouse in the engine! My tiger will scare her out.") Got home at about quarter to 1AM. Blah. Sorry to those of you who'll be looking for us this morning. Sorry we're gonna miss the show. Sorry I gotta rig something to get the pulley off of my autotranny Square on the first day of my vacation... :( -Greg '69 & '71 Squarebacks '63 Beetle ------------------------------------------------------------------- Unsubscribe? mailto:type3-request@vwtype3.org, Subject: unsubscribe
