I haven't done this on a type III but I have many times on a type I. The 'T' fits inside the pump, after the cover and internal parts (gears?) are removed. There are two holes in the pump case that the ears of the T fit into. Slide the T in at an angle into one hole, the rock the T and slide into the other hole. All else is correct.
