A very nicely told story, and very puzzling. Both the starter and the generator, running as a motor, would tend to turn the engine CW (as viewed from the rear.) The generator doesn't have enough torque to do this, however; you can stop it with your hand. I have seen starters get stuck, either due to a fault in the starter, or a fault in the ignition switch, but of course this always results in a CW rotation. One of my favorite stories was about a friend who's ignition switch return spring was shot. He had gotten used to returning the key from the START position to the RUN position by hand once the engine started. He forgot to mention this to a woman friend that he loaned the car to, however. She started the car and proceeded to drive about 10 miles at 60 mph when her drive was suddenly interrupted by a loud BANG. The starter armature had finally exploded from being continually over-revved. When she tried to restart the engine there was no response at all (surprise, surprise.) Thinking that I might find enough to be salvagable, I offered to try to rebuild the starter. When I opened it up the hollow shell of the starter was filled with what appeared to be copper colored sand, and nothing else. I sent it back to Bosch as a core. I don't think they made much on that rebuild.
