CD writers are *cheap*. So cheap that I picked on up at CostCo/Price Club
the other day (an HP CD-Writer Plus 7200i) for Godzilla (my machine here at
work). Actually, picked up two of them (one for Baby Godzilla, my home
machine). The media is down to under a $1.00 per CD (where as about a yeat
ago, it was about $10-$15 per CD if you bought them in bulk).
I have been scanning and collecting a lot of images (VW, Porsche, BMW and
Audi to name a few) as of late. Some I've placed on my site, other's I've
done as favors for other's who don't have a scanner.
I've been thinking about putting together a collection of pictures, tech
articles, sounds, music, even AVI/Quick Time movies and placing them on a
CD. Each CD can hold about 650MB of data (or 74 minutes of music which I
haven't played with yet). That's a lot of data even for large scanned images.
What I am proposing is this: If you have images, sounds, screensavers,
AVI/QuickTime movies, tech articles, horror stories, whatever ... I want to
place it on a CD. Then for those that would like to a "hard copy" to view
at their liesure (at least until something like Cable Modem becomes more
"world wide").
For now, cost per CD would be around $3 to $5 each (this would include
shipping).
Other things I would put on this CD would be URL's, ICQ numbers and even
various "Digest" clips ... and if anyone can think of anything else of
interest, lemme know!
One of the obvious things would be to include instructions on how to
subscribe and unsubscribe to various mailing lists. (c=
I'm also no long subscribed to the Type III list, and I know some of you
are so could you please forward this message to that list? Same with the
Type II list and just about every other VW related list. I would be
appreciative.
Since I'm one of the WWWV manager's (http://www.WorldWideWolksVagen.org/),
I was thinking about perhaps taking the online data base (with the help of
Pim) and placing it on the CD.
And last, this is not an April fool's joke. I am serious about trying this
but I will need some help. If you would like to help out this project and
see how easy or hard it will be, drop me an email.
I would even consider doing CD's for your Club.
The only downside to my CD writer is that it's only a double speed when it
comes to writing. It took about 40 minutes to do a 600MB CD write
yesterday. So I can't really crank them out veryt fast. As soon as the 6
and 8 speed writers are available, then we should be *cookin'*.
Again, if you would like to help out, please drop me an email to one of my
email addresses listed in my sig.
Thanks!
