I know of several people who have taken their car to a VW dealer (hmmm, these folks are all on the west coast...) and paid like $90 or so for the labor to completely diagnose the car. Then what you do is go & replace by yourself whatever they said was faulty--that way you're not paying dealer prices for parts & further labor. Rocky Mountain doesn't list manifold pressure sensors for '71 (just earlier & later). They're not the final word, but it's a good indication. Price is in the ~$250 range. For all of you Type III folks... when you're at a VW show, hit the swap meet. Learn how to i.d. fuel injection parts, and stock up. Make low offers--I've bought manifold pressure sensors & distributors for as low as $1!!! Use tactics like "nobody's into Type IIIs" and "everybody with a Type III has converted to carbs anyway." Offer to take a whole box of f.i. parts off of their hands for a bargain price. "For $25, you won't have to lug that box [full of $600 worth of f.i. parts!] back home again." Do you have the book called "How to Tune and Modify Bosch Electronic Fuel Injection"? It's from Classic Motorbooks, and I like it much better than the blue Bosch f.i. "bible". It has some good, systematic diagnostic procedures. Best of luck, and hang in there! -Greg '69 & '71 Squarebacks '63 Beetle
