Re[2]: gauges

He didn't give any specific information about name brands, just saying that they
are all inaccurate (to what degree he didn't say).

It's my understanding that the sensor needs to be at the spark plug -- at the
head would give a different reading. Put the sensor collar at the base of the
spark plug and them screw in the spark plug. That way the sensor will be right
on top of the cylinder head/spark plug and give you a more accurate reading. On
the FI vehicles the head temp sensor is actually screwed in to the head (and
replacing that sensor on a 914 is possible in an hour but it's a bitch!). If
your block is a FI one then you could get a sensor to screw in the boss already
there. However, I *think* you wouldn't be able to use your current setup --
you'd need to get some other temp gauge that's calibrated to the sensor that
would fit the boss, sayyyy maybe one from a Porsche 914 (VW T4 FI block and they
did have oil and engine temp kits...).

Also, I believe the general understanding for most gauges (except those
expensive ones) is to use them as an indicator and not as an absolute. You say
your temp averages 200F then that's what you monitor *your* engine with. Should
the gauge read 265F on a hot day whilst you're toodling up a steep incline you
would say to yourself, "HOLY HOTHEADS, Batman, I'm overheating my engine and
better pull over ASAP!". The head stud may actually be hotter but that doesn't
*really* matter since your meter shows a dramatic difference from the norm.

That's pretty much how I use my VDO oil pressure gauge. I believe it to be
pretty accurate (well, the sender does the actual reading) for oil pressure and
it doubles as an engine temp indicator as well. When the pressure reading is
lower than what it is 'normally' for the given environment conditions then I
know that my baby is running a little hotter than her 'norm' (and engine timing
can really make a difference in the fine tuning!).

...
AAR, about the thread going on about VDO's, could Toby E. possibly tell
me what Gene B. said about temp. gauges? I have a VDO's in mine and I'm
not really thrilled about the temps its giving (~200 degrees F. at the
head stud, and that seems a little on the low side, doesn't it?) and I'm
wondering if I'm missing something here. Thanks again.
