Had scored some new (unused) ones, got them home, and found out that they are without the stock heater flaps in place. Looked identical from the outside, just didn't have the lever on the end. Pulled the (rotted) ones off the car and found that if I drilled out the spot welds on the snout where the flex tube attaches, and flipped off the cap that was crimped in place, I could pull the whole "snout and flap" assembly out. Ditto drilling the new boxes, 86 the non-flapped snouts, put the flapped ones in their place, weld up the drill holes and that secures the new snouts in place. Now I have *new* heater boxes, never before used, complete with asbestos blankets on them (!). What we won't do to have "new" parts, huh? My wife came home, saw me up to my fatushka in grease and parts, and asked why is it that whenever you buy parts for that car, they're never the right ones? It's great isn't it? AAR, about the thread going on about VDO's, could Toby E. possibly tell me what Gene B. said about temp. gauges? I have a VDO's in mine and I'm not really thrilled about the temps its giving (~200 degrees F. at the head stud, and that seems a little on the low side, doesn't it?) and I'm wondering if I'm missing something here. Thanks again. David Walters '73 1600 L Notch S. FL, USA
