Neil, I'd say your car is not sick, its on it's deathbed. Are the valves adjusted properly? I don't think that three cylinders would have valves gone on them all at once but you neve know. Advice, Put a little bit of oil down the bores in cylinders 1, 3 and 4. Do another compression test. If the numbers are higher, then it is rings. If not it is most likely valves. Pull the heads, and check the valves. If if is rings you may only need new rings for cylinders 1, 3 and 4. 120lbs in No. 2 sounds Ok to me. But as you've got it down, have a look and see if there is anything wrong with No. 2 cylinder as well. Ie scoring in the bore, etc. I'm surprised the thing even runs with those figures. Whilst you go down to the short block check the wear/movement on the bottom end. Just as a precaution though. Does anyone know what the lowest psi level a VW will run on?
