I used a product called Simple Green. It's a clear general purpose cleaner
that's, well, the color green. I misted a sponge with it, wiped/lightly
scrubbed a small section then rinsed the sponge in a bucket of water and
rewiped the area to clean up the residue. Wow, there was a white headliner
under those 25 years of dust particles! Lucky for me I have a ragtop so
there wasn't a whole lot to clean :) I did notice that the first section
of my headliner, the windshield section, was an off-white compared to the
other sections of headliner -- they must've used a non-contiguous piece of
material when they made my headliner so they discolored differently over
time (? hey, it sounds good to me!).
You could probably get the same results with warm, soapy water (but don't
over do it on the soap, okay!). Just make sure you rinse the surface to
remove any extra soap/cleaner.
