Hi Volks, I just got off the phone with Geoff at California Import Parts (in BC, Canada actually) about their late Type III fiberglass front fenders. Good guy to talk to--gave me the time of day, answered all of my questions, etc. Owns three Notchbacks himself. Here's the scoop (if I can read my notes correctly): They got their hands on a pair of NOS German T3 fenders, and had fiberglass molds made of them. Their first batch is all sold out--they're going to see about another run shortly. Geoff said that they will push through orders on demand, though. Two of the pairs they had made did have problems with the fabrication, as the 'glass shop messed up something with the mold. When they're installed, you have to do some fitting at the door seam--there is some excess material that has to be be ground off, or else the door will catch the lip when it closes. The headlight bucket is there, but you have to "glass in the tangs for the headlight." You make the holes for the turn signal mounting, and there's likewise a recess for the gas filler; again, you punch the holes, and the stock filler setup will go in. Ditto for the fender screw holes: there are recesses, you drill. They've had problems with getting UPS to take them, as they put two in a box and the box is large; some of the drivers refuse the box. Once they got zapped w/ a $200 shipping bill when UPS decided to send the box by air on another carrier--but for customers, the grand total (US dollars) is: $244 for a pair of fenders, $18.95 for shipping $244 worth of stuff, plus $10 extra shipping charge for each fender. For a pair, that's: $244 + 18.95 + $10 + $10 = $282.95 (if I added correctly;) Also, these are the same folks (www.vwcalimports.com) that have the T3 window scrapers for US$40 a pop. Geoff says they get them from the same place as WCM, but that they bought in big quantities & WCM really jacks up the price. If anybody's interested, I would suggest giving Geoff a call so that he's encouraged to get the fiberglass shop to do another run. Tell him that "Greg from the internet" sent you. Their number is (800) 313-3811 or (604) 434-8300. John C.--you should show these prices to your local guy who's trying to charge $200 each or whatever for original fenders...! Tell him you can get a pair of "new" never-rust fiberglass ones for under $250... :) If anybody gets these fenders or scrapers or other stuff from these folks, send a report to the group!!! -Greg '69 & '71 Squarebacks '63 Beetle
