I use a set of clamps just designed to close off the rubber fuel lines while doing work on attached components. They'd better be in good condition when you use them, they'll crack old fuel line. They're availble from any good auto parts store, and maybe Sears as well, I think Lisle makes them. They are just small blocks of steel with a rectanglular cut off one edge, an L-shaped piece of steel rod and a wing nut. A guy could make them himself if he saw them, but they were fairly cheap and I needed them now. About the only gas I spill is what's in the short section of fuel line and the filter. You need three if you're going to change fuel lines or work on the pump, two will get your filter changed. I used needle-nosed vice grips before, they didn't seal completely.
