Bad news, Toby, Unless, by some miracle, your clutch is on its way out AND a couple of other (long shot) coincidences, it sounds to me as if the tranny's pretty fried... Usually if it's trying to move when you're in neutral, it means that the bearings on the inside of the (constant mesh) gears are going bad, as does noise. Metal shavings, too, are pretty scary. Usually, if a trans goes dry, it wrecks the shafts' bearing surfaces, which means new shafts and bearings, and if it got really bad, new gears, too. Which is pretty much the whole biscuit, and given the (relative) inexpense of a used or reconditioned box, that would seem to be the way to go, especially as the hypoid gear would have picked up the swarf from the tranny and ground it into itself. On the up side, at least you weren't stranded on the way IN... and you weren't stuck working Bumbershoot all weekend Toby 'I've got to get a real job' Basiliko Toby Erkson wrote: > > Okay kids, here's a condensed story of my weekend so gather 'round and > remember, when the story's over and you're laying in bed, don't turn out > > So, here's my problem and I'm hoping to get some info before I go out and > buy a brand new tranny: > Tranny cold: Car wants to move forward in neutral, must keep clutch > in if idling. Shifting is very unreliable, it may go in, more than likely
