 made one for years and years and years and years.

 12v radios off 6v (european cars, motorcycles, etc)
 And also to run 6v stuff off 12v sources.

I've got one of these! I had it in a 66 bug and I used it to run a SONY 12
volt deck with the stock 6V system. It worked pretty good, but I sold the
bug....and kept the converter.
