survey reply

Fellow Subscribers --

I have been absorbing the give-and-take for a month or so, and thought Mr.
Greppmeir's recent survey request would be an appropriate time to jump into
the dialogue.

Thirteen years ago, I purchased my grandparents' Ruby Red 1500S with about
55k original miles. The VIN # is 0304088 and the engine # is 0378760. I
include these numbers in hope of having my first question answered: What
year is this? My grandmother wrote "1963" on the Bill of Sale, while the
accompanying insurance policy listed it as "1964."

The vehicle is generally in "good" condition (all original engine &
mechanical parts), with the original paint (some minor cracking), NO rust
(thanks to our California climate!), and so far, only a headlight ring
replaced. [ A 50k JPEG photo is available.] I'm going to need some
additional chrome pieces, and an armrest for the interior, but the inside
is in otherwise very good condition.

After over a decade of storage, all that was required to get it
up-and-running was a new 6V battery, boiling-out the gas tank, carburetor
maintenance, replacement of belts & hoses and a transmission axle boot
repair. [Done by a very appreciative local German mechanic -- I'm not
mechanically inclined.]

I have copies of both the English and German owner's manuals, and a
beautiful, full-color cut-away illustration which came with one or the
other edition. Are these rare? [I've scanned it, and would be happy to
share it with those interested.]

A question to any members of NONA [Notchback Owners of North America]:
what's the story with them? I faxed Lee Hedges on August 4th, applying for
membership. After not hearing anything, I called him a couple weeks later.
He apologized, and explained he was in the midst of a move. It has been
over three weeks and I still haven't received an application form, and the
NONA web page doesn't appear to have been modified THIS YEAR! With only
roughly 100 members, one might expect them to stay more up-to-speed, no?

One final thought: wouldn't a Type III USENET group be a more appropriate
Internet gathering place for us, rather than the current List Server
set-up? I don't know about anybody else, but I would prefer to keep my
E-Mail reserved for actual two-way communications. [Since I'm new here, I'm
guessing the suggestion may have been brought up & disposed of previously,
but the thought occurred to me and I thought I'd toss it out.]

In any case, glad to be in touch with so many passionate & knowledgeable
Type III-er's.
