Re: Porsche 5-speed

Do you know what the cost of rebuilding a Porsche tranny is? Well, I took
out a $2000 loan for the stock rebuild of my 914 (I can tell you the final
cost as soon as it's done). A good stock T3 rebuild is less than $500
(conservative guess), even less if you remove/install it yourself.

With that, you could do it but you will have **engine cooling problems**,
will need a KEP adapter to fit the tranny to the engine, if the tranny came
from a 914 it will need to be cracked open to flop the gears since you'll
have five different reverse gears and only one forward, special mounting
brackets will need to be fabricated and welded to your body/frame to
support the tranny, and you will need to fabricate your own shifter
mounting and linkage as the tranny is shifted from the side and not the
nose cone like what we're used to.

Don't do it unless you've got lots of money and don't want to drive it for
some time.

The wheel bearings may need replacing, possibly the CV joints (if you hear a
clunking at times).

Hello, I was just wondering if I could put a porshe 5-speed behind my
type-3's 1776 dual carb engine without deletorious effects. I can get a
fairly good deal for the transmission, and my old one is still stocka nd
makes a lot of noise(not bad noise but old noise) Also, my wheels are
really loud at higher speeds, could new bearings help?

Thanks, Nathan B.
