Thanks for all thoses that replied to my question. Here's the summary, as I understand it: Manual Trans: OK to tow with wheels on the ground. Make sure the trans is in Neutral and the steering wheel is not locked. Normal wear and tear from the miles towed should be expected. Auto Trans: OK to tow short distances (30 miles or less) at slow speed (30 mph or less) with the wheels on the ground (per the VW Owners Manual). If towing fast or far or both, best to trailer the car. If must be towed with the rear wheels on the ground, the axle shafts should be removed so that the trans does not rotate. The auto trans is only lubricated when the engine is running. Can tow backwards, but at highway speeds could be a bit unstable because of the tow-in (no pun intended) of front wheels. Could tow with the engine on but lose the ability to monitor engine vitals. Thanks again to all, now I just need a volunteer to tow the car to Michigan. Any takers? I also asked the group about non-VW pattern wheels on a T3 a while back. Did not get any response. Does everybody out there only run stock wheels or 8-spokes? I am looking for experience with re-drilling the rotors and hubs. Thanks again. -- John Jaranson Research Engineer Ford Motor Company SRL 2621 Dearborn, MI 48121 (313)323-0553 (313)845-4724 FAX
