There's a number of things that can affect starting, poor adjustment on the throttle position switch(not sure if a '72 has 4 contacts or 5), air leakage from any or all of the hoses and seals, misadjusted auxilary air regulator, messed-with pressure sensor, a bad temp sensor on the head. Could be any or a combination of these. As a start, check your seals and hoses, replace cracked and hard ones. If the throttle position switch doesn't have the "closed" contatcts closed at idle, it's telling the control unit that you've got your foot on the throttle, messes up starting. Follow the Bentley manual to check out your '72 switch. On your heater tube problem, which one are you refering to, the heater box to body one, the cold air one to the thermostat from the fan elbow, or one of the pieces off the fan housing? Or maybe you're refering to the heater box itself? If it's the heater box to body one, I've used spiral wound flex exhaust tubing with an ID of 2 3/8". Galvanized probably availble from your local auto parts place, Stainless available from J.C. Whitney. You have to cut to length and snake it in there, it's stiff. Other pieces are available from wrecks, have never seen NOS parts. Sure it's burning oil and not leaking it(like out the front crank seal)? Fumes can be bad hatch seal, leaky heater box or ?
